YOU NEED COURAGE

In addition to gut-level honesty, true accountability requires something that, deep down, most of us have: courage. This is the real crux of the thing, the enormously hot furnace where all the impurities rises to the surface.

While honesty is basically providing an inventory of who you are, courage is taking a look at that inventory and asking a single, solitary question:

Why?

Why do you do the things you do? Why are you driven to act in a certain way? What obstacles or roadblocks get in your way and keep you from living a life full of freedom?

Imagine this fuller, more accountable life as an adventure. But in order to live this adventure, you’re going to have to walk down some untested roads and maybe duck your head into a dark cavern or two that holds nothing but foreboding. Think of any fantastical, quest-type tale you’ve ever heard or read or seen in a movie, and there is always the inevitable part where the hero must venture into the unknown in order to vanquish the foe.

It’s just part of the package. And it takes courage.
